Handel’s Messiah (HMV 56) is one of the most celebrated choral works of all time. Structured in three parts, it tells the story of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection through biblical texts. Part I, often associated with Advent and Christmas, focuses on prophecy and Christ’s birth.

Part I opens with the solemn Sinfony, followed by the lyrical tenor aria Comfort Ye, My People, introducing the theme of redemption. The bright Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted reflects imagery of valleys rising and hills lowering. The chorus And the Glory of the Lord is a jubilant proclamation of divine majesty. Highlights include For Unto Us a Child Is Born, a joyful depiction of Christ’s birth, and Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion, a virtuosic soprano aria.

Later sections include The Trumpet Shall Sound from Part III, a triumphant bass aria celebrating the resurrection. The Hallelujah chorus, closing Part II, is the most iconic movement, powerfully declaring Christ’s triumph over death. The final chorus, Worthy Is the Lamb, concludes with a majestic Amen fugue.

Messiah remains a masterpiece of dramatic storytelling and musical brilliance, beloved by audiences and choirs worldwide.
